You need complete confidence in your ability to trek for many days over difficult terrain. Extremes of altitude and weather may be encountered, as may the use of ice axes and crampons. It is important to have stamina because walking days can last up to six hours or more, with daily ascents of around 900m and 1000m. Fitness is important at this grade, which compares to extended walking in mountainous terrain such as the Lakes or Snowdonia.

Moderate hikes are designed for those with a moderate level of fitness. They often involve higher altitudes, or days with steep inclines. Although little preparation is needed for moderate treks, you should be healthy, reasonably fit and be exercising regularly to fully enjoy your trip.
