26 Best Hikes In New Zealand

Perhaps the closest thing to a trek would be one of our lesser-known multi-day hikes in one of our more isolated National Parks such as Nelson Lakes. Nelson Lakes National Park is located at the top end of South Island and covers approximately 102,000 hectares. The landscape is centered around two sparkling lakes and includes native beech forest as well as clear mountain streams, rugged peaks, and rocky ridgelines.

Expect to pay around 40 NZD per person for a shuttle to and from the trail. The hike is the perfect multi-day trek for anyone that loves mountains and breathtaking alpine landscapes. The hike begins along the shores Lake Te Anau, New Zealand’s second largest lake. The hike also finishes along a lakeside as well, this time next to Lake Manapouri.

Instead of mountain peaks, you’ll enjoy beautiful coastal bays, stunning beaches, and even warmer weather. Abel Tasman Coast Track is the most famous hiking trail in the Abel Tasman region. This 60-kilometer (37.3 mile) one-way trail is actually one New Zealand’s 10 Great Walks. Sealy Tarns can be reached by following the orange markers up a trail that leads to the Mueller Ridge. Here you will have front row seats to see the amazing Mueller glacier. Continue on the ridge for 20 minutes and you’ll reach the Mueller Hut, a stunning 28-bed alpine cabin that is available for booking starting at US$10 per Night. Most hikers use the hut for lunch and then return to their cars. This makes it one of the most rewarding day hikes in New Zealand.

Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is home to some of the highest mountains and the longest glaciers. You’ll find sweeping glaciers, high-rise peaks, and permanent snowfields. Although it encompasses 23 peaks over 3,000 meters high, this park is very accessible. State Highway 80 leads to Aoraki/Mount Cook Village, which is situated beside the scenic Lake Pukaki.

Over 85% of the island is National Park, and most people come here for hiking and birdwatching. The island has just 28km of road, but 280km of walking tracks suited to short walks, day hikes, and multi-day excursions. Walk the three-day Rakiura Track for the full experience of Stewart Island’s natural beauty. You’ll find a sanctuary threatened off the coast of Ulva Island with dozens native species.
